The station is owned by New Zealand Media and Entertainment and first launched in 1993. The Hits was formerly known as Classic Hits until 4th April 2014 when it was rebranded to its current name and format. The station is estimated to have around 282,000 listeners per week. The Hits can be listened to online, however the online stream will only work in New Zealand and cannot be listened to outside of the country unless using a VPN.
